4337 Arecibo - occultations on June/July/August 2021

(4337) Arecibo is a main-belt asteroid with a diameter estimation of approximately 20 km. Recently, in work still unpublished, it was detected a satellite around Arecibo.

There will be several events in June, July, August and early September 2021, involving stars with G* magnitudes between 10.5 and 15.3 and maximum expected durations for the main body of a few seconds.

The events will be visible, mostly, from the southern hemisphere. The list of forthcoming occultations and related maps are provided below. The full lines indicate Arecibo's size. The blue dashed lines are the 3-sigma uncertainty on the position of the main body and the red dashed lines represent a raw estimate of the uncertainty on the satellite's position. The large black dot represents the central instant of the event and each small black dot represent a 60 s difference. All dates and times are in UTC.

The predictions were obtained using the SORA package, from the orbit available in Horizons and stars from the Gaia DR2 catalogue.

Several observers in South America are joining us in this campaign. We already have some reports of observations from the first events and also on the photometry of Arecibo.

We invite you to coordinate with us if you have a mobile station or access to a professional telescope so that we can ensure good coverage across tracks.

Pay attention to the conversion from UTC to local time, some events might be on the night of the previous day on your site.

This research made use of SORA, a python package for stellar occultations reduction and analysis, developed with the support of ERC Lucky Star and LIneA /Brazil.
